American Red Cross Classes

The Connection offers the following American Red Cross certification classes:
  • Lifeguarding Training
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer 
  • Lifeguarding and CPR recert challenges
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) 
  • Babysitting Training
     
October 2011 - June 2012 Courses

Lifeguarding: Teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries. 
Prerequisites: Participants must be 15 by completion of the course. Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl and breaststroke only starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. 
Certification Requirement: Attend all class sessions, demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, successfully complete three final skill scenarios, and score an 80 percent or higher on the final written exam. Course length is 30-37hours; 2 year CPR/AED certification and 3 year Lifeguarding certification.
Price:$350 (non-member), $285(member)

Water Safety Instructor: Students will be certified to teach a variety of classes for infants through adults. The class also includes the American Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor (FIT) Training course. Prerequisites: Participants must be 16 by completion of the course. Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills: 25 yards each of Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breast Stroke, Elementary Backstroke, and Side Stroke, 15 yards of Butterfly, and Maintain position on back in deep water and treading water for 1 minute each.
Certification Requirement: Attend all class sessions, demonstrate competency in all homework assignments and activities, successfully complete and prepare for three practices, and score an 80 percent or higher on the final written exam. 
Certification: After successful completion of the WSI course you must make an appointment at your local red cross to become authorized. Once you are authorized you must teach at least one class per year and send your local Red cross the proper paper paperwork.

American Red Cross Recertification Courses

Lifeguard Recertification
(including CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer) – Challenge: The Lifeguarding recert challenge begins with a brief CPR/AED skills review and a Q& A (see CPR/AED Challenge for skills required). Participants will then take a CPR/AED written test followed by an individual practical skills test. After completion of all CPR/AED skills students will be taken to the water for another brief skills review and Q&A session. A lifeguard and first aid written test will be given prior to the testing of in-water skills. Once participants begin testing of in-water skills, they must be prepared to perform all proper entries, active, passive (surface and submerged) and spinal (surface and submerged) rescues and the ability to remove patrons from the water during both passive and spinal emergencies without teacher corrections.  Participants that successfully pass all practical skills and written tests with a score of 80% or better will receive 2 certification cards: Lifeguarding/First Aid valid for 3 years and CPR-PR/AED valid for 2 years.

A reminder to participants: a membership to The Connection is not required. Please bring a bathing suit for water skills and pocket mask the day of testing. Pocket masks can be purchased before testing at The Connection for $20.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer – Challenge: This course test participants in their ability to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies that occur in adults, children and infants.  A brief skills review and Q&A session will be offered prior to any testing.  However, participants should be prepared to take a written test and perform all practical skills without any assistance from the instructor (prompting will be given when necessary).  The course provides real life scenarios which reinforce decision-making skills.  Skills test includes: primary assessment, ventilations (including the use of CPR barriers and use of the BVM), choking (including conscious and unconscious), CPR (one and two rescuers) and the use of an AED machine.  Participants that successfully pass all practical skills and written tests with a score of 80% or better will receive a CPR-PR/AED valid for 2 years.
